Department Overview
We train and develop civil engineers to build a safe and secure society.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering aims to produce civil engineers who will contribute to society by developing and maintaining safe and secure infrastructure as public property essential for human social life. Recent frequent natural disasters, such as earthquakes, storms, and flooding, have raised people’s awareness about the natural environment and made them recognize the importance of infrastructure. Many graduates of the Department find posts as high-ranking government officials or jobs with general contractors. Other graduates are prominently active at design consultants or road- or railroad-related companies.
Curriculum Designed to Cover Basics through Applications to Fulfill the Needs of Society
To become civil engineers capable of contributing to society by developing and maintaining safe and secure infrastructure, students learn the basic subjects required for civil engineers during their first and second years; while during their second and third years, they study an extensive range of specialized subjects. Specialized subjects help students deepen their understanding of the expert knowledge required of high-ranking government officials and general contractor employees through experimental subjects and field surveys. Moreover, a broad range of elective subjects are also offered, including Disaster Engineering, which imparts knowledge in disaster prevention to meet the needs of the times; Maintenance Engineering, which teaches techniques used to maintain civil engineering structures; Universal Design for developing a human welfare perspective; and Landscape Engineering, in which students learn the value of landscapes.
